Rutland’s Heritage Roofs

You will find the village of Collyweson on the eastern boundary of Rutland and Northamptonshire. Here, the Collyweston mines lie, hence the naming of his beautiful slate.
Rutland has a rich heritage of utilising Collyweston slate. Indeed, you can see it adorning numerous historic buildings across the county. This distinctive slate reaches out into Rutland’s picturesque villages and even graces the roof of Oakham Castle. Throughout Rutland, Collyweston slate has left its mark.

Archaeologists have proven the early use of this slate roofing material dates back to Roman times. Results of archaeological excavations in Roman settlements like Thistleton and Great Casterton confirm its early use as a roofing material.
In fact, before the 19th century, Collyweston Slate was the favoured roofing material throughout Rutland. However, with the advent of railways, Welsh Blue Slate emerged as a more economically viable alternative.
